Design Details

The Sovereign-Class began development in 2365 intended to be the latest and greatest in Starfleet exploration starships. Following the USS Enterprise-D's encounter with the Borg later that same year, Starfleet augmented the design with fighting the Borg in mind. A year later in 2366 with the Battle of Wolf 359 in which Starfleet was exposed to the full force and power of the Borg, Starfleet's entire policy of Starship design shifted towards combating the cybernetic foe.

The Sovereign class of Starships was quite adaptable to many different mission types, whether that be scientific, defensive or diplomatic. With 24 decks, 2 shuttlebays and an additional captain's yacht docked on the underside of the saucer section the Sovereign has a large capacity for secondary craft.

The warp-core is based on a new modified design to allow for set nacelles, this design does not have the same damaging effect on subspace that necessitated the variable geometry warp nacelles that was part of the Interpid-class. The ship does however incorporate the same bioneural gel packs that were first introduced in the Intrepid-Class.

Much like some of her predecessor's, the Constituation and Galaxy classes, the Sovereign-class is capable of saucer separation. While designed to do it though, as once separated the saucer does not have the ability to go to warp, simply have warp sustainers.

The Sovereign-class is the first to introduce Quantum Torpedoes. Conceived as a replacement for the standard Photon Torpedo, the Quantum Torpedo utilizes zero-point energy reaction to create a massive explosion almost 2x as powerful as the maximum photon level. Plans for the Quantum Torpedo were accelerated as part of the anti-Borg technology following Wolf 359 and rushed into service with the Sovereign class.

Armed with 12 phaser arrays situated all over the ship, the Sovereign class was designed to have every firing arc covered by a phaser strip to allow for fire to always be directed at the enemy target. To back up the phaser's fire power, the class has 6 torpedo launchers, 5 photon torpedos launchers, 2 fore facing and 3 aft facing as well as the aforementioned Quantum Torpedo launcher.

History of the Sovereign

The USS Sovereign's keel was originally laid in 2368 with a two-year construction cycle being the initial goal. Compared to most ships and their delays, the sheer force of will behind Starfleet's need and goals to create a ship that could properly combat the Borg and replace the Galaxy-class and Excelsior-Class as the premiere exploration ship lead the ship to be completed in that time frame. The Sovereign was officially launched under the registry NX-90201 in 2370 under the command of Captain Dustin Bridger.

Initial trials of the ships proved to be successful, with her sister ship the USS Honorius (soon to be renamed the Enterprise after the loss of the Enterprise-D) being laid down the same year of the Sovereign's launch. Design flaws in the defensive systems, namely the new regenerative shielding (mainly a phase synchronization instability caused by the graviton polarity generator) and the enhanced deflector dish (upgrades to the gravimetric distortion package caused the dish to draw far more power which caused power drains in other primary systems), caused the Sovereign to soon be relegated to an orbital yard above Utopia Planitia while upgrades to the systems to fix the issues were developed.

Once these issues were fixed via upgrades and a little helping hand from the legendary Montgomery Scott, the rest of the Sovereign's systems were upgraded to more stable versions of much of its experimental technology. As Captain Bridger had moved on during the ships extensive downtime, a new Captain was selected to command the newly refit starship.

Captain Adisen Terim, fresh from command of the USS Hope, an Excelsior-Class starship, was selected due to her diverse experience in sciences and engineering. Join her now as the ship launches once more into the black in what many hope is a new age of exploration despite the rising tensions in the galaxy.
